What is a BSN?
BSN is a social security number. It is short for ‘burgerservicenummer’. With a BSN, you can identify yourself at any governmental or official service in the Netherlands. You can use it if you need care, want to subscribe to an educational institution, apply for rent benefit or healthcare benefits. A BSN makes it easier for official organisations to exchange personal details without making errors. Non-governmental organisations can only request your BSN, if the law requires it.
How can get I get a BSN?
The municipality in which you live will give you a BSN after you have finished your registration. You must register within five days of arriving in the Netherlands.
Please note that to prevent identity fraud, it is very important that only you are using your own BSN.
